Finding Michael (2023)

The part I found particularly distasteful was when he went to the deceased Sherpa’s brother and mother beforehand, telling them that as a “plan B” they would recover his body instead. The poor mother couldn’t keep it together at the prospect.

It made me think how cruel it would have been to build up hope for a recovery that was relatively straightforward, but not go through with it because “Plan A” was successful instead.

And consider this… would they have shown the footage of Spencer telling the family in advance if Plan A was successful? Absolutely not – after building up hope they would have just left the family behind with nothing.

Spencer didn’t give a sh.. about that family. He was only interested in his brother (fair enough), his image, and the documentary.

Clearly it was never intended that the viewer would think as deeply in hypotheticals as this – we’re just meant to go along with portrayal of Spencer as a benevolent being.

Very poor optics.
