Best Review: Among all the films with the name “Nanny”, you can easily get confused. Some are a black comedy starring Samara Weaving, others are a horror about otherworldly forces in the house with Mackenzie Davis, and the “Nanny” shot by Nikiatu Jisu is something similar to horror, but still more suitable for the genre of melodrama.
Aisha (Anna Diop), having got a job as a nanny for the child of a rich couple from Manhattan, is faced with incomprehensible obsessions that cloud her consciousness. Frightening but fascinating images of African folklore somehow unnaturally intersect with reality, and the woman herself is unable to distinguish what is really happening and what is only a figment of her imagination.
There is no doubt that Nikiatu Jisu tried to display some traditional elements of her people. She herself has roots going back to Sierra Leone, but it is clear that a woman is building a career in Hollywood. However, in “Nanny” the African colorfulness is clearly displayed and can be considered a kind of tribute from the director in relation to his people. Whether it’s national dishes, afro—pigtails or folk tales about mermaids and the interpretation of visions – all this looks quite curious and, as it were, introduces the viewer to what he has hitherto been unaware of.
But it is impossible to say that everything in the “Nanny” is focused on this. Colorfulness is only one of the facets of the “Nanny”. The rest of the film focuses on the theme of obsessions as a harbinger of something bad that is about to happen. The viewer, like the main character, will have to guess until the very end what everything that is happening with Aisha means.
I can write like this: if you are tired of movies in which the main idea is obsession, sinister forces in a house or apartment — “Nanny”, perhaps you will like it. At least the picture is able to surprise with what everything eventually comes to.
By itself, the film, due to its slow, slow narration, seems a little boring. For the first 30-40 minutes, little happens. The viewer, using the camera operator, follows the main character, sees how she looks at her friend. Braiding pigtails, communicating with a child on the phone, doing work, getting to know someone. All this looks like the heading “One day in the life …”
Plus, I didn’t really like the storyline of Aisha’s relationship with her employers. As events unfold, the attitude of the main character to the married couple does not change for the better. She becomes more arrogant and arrogant, while the same heroine Michelle Monahan remains herself in general. And on such a contrast, the attitude towards the main character also changes. At least that was the case in my case, but I don’t know how it will be with you.
Well, there are minor points to which you can cling if desired. I’ve never seen people in the pool, for example, without a hat, and even with long hair. But here such a scene is present (for the beauty of the picture, of course). But these are all nuances that simply raise questions, but do not affect the perception of what they saw.
However, you should watch. I do not impose my opinion on anyone.
